About

Dissatisfied and disillusioned with the contemporary theatre industry, company directors Louise Oliver & Frodo McDaniel came together in 2004 with the intention of creating thought provoking theatre with a fun and playful edge and to produce work for Scottish artists that left Scottish audiences feeling entertained again.

Rhymes with Purple is a non-profit, new writing theatre company based in Glasgow. When asked to sum up our company in a few words we use the terms; new theatre, new writing, collaboration and innovation. Rhymes with Purple does not limit its remit or artistic opportunities and thrives on collaborating with other artists. Most of our work is of a devised nature allowing for a constant flow of ideas and work that is informed by the artistic contribution from everyone involved. Our practise involves starting with a good idea and assembling the team appropriate to the project, we primarily work with emerging Scottish artists.

As a small company that receives a lot of in-kind support from our artists and organisations that have championed our work such as the Tron and the Arches, Rhymes with Purple has never been formally funded for the work we produce however we endeavour not to compromise on artistic quality. Therefore we focus on the quality of performance, text and ideas.

We aim to create one new theatrical production per year but also produce regular small scale cabaret events such as Dr Sketchys Anti-Art School and The Not So Secret Society . These small, scratch-type events allow us to maintain a platform for entertainment and experimentation in a variety of performance skills throughout the year.

Workshops

Rhymes with Purple regularly runs workshops in a number of performance skills across Scotland.

All workshops are tutored by professional performers and can be booked anywhere in the UK and are available for one-to-one tuition.

Why we need your help & what's in it for you

Rhymes with Purple is a non-profit making organisation; all money made from ticket sales is filtered straight into pre-production for our next project. The relationship between the arts and business world is an extremely productive and lucrative one and by bringing artists and arts processes into a business context we can help stimulate imaginative and innovative thinking, and so achieve business solutions that are beneficial for both parties. For example; bringing the arts into a corporate or business environment can making teambuilding workshops interesting, fun and informative As an associate organisation your support will provide a platform for information, networking, marketing and promotion for your business as well as ours.Qualitative research shows that a sponsorships ability to create goodwill and warmth towards the sponsor is at its strongest when the activity being sponsored is seen as both important and in need of financial support. Arts sponsorship satisfies both these criteria; there is such limited funding for small arts organisations and a lot rely on the help they receive from businesses and individuals. Qualitative research also indicates that the goodwill created is much greater if the audience believes that the sponsor is making a particular contribution. A US study of sponsorship showed that appreciation of the sponsor increased dramatically when the sponsors persuaded the audience that the event would have been impossible without the sponsorship. Why should a business, which may already be sponsoring sports or television programmes, invest in arts sponsorship? One central reason is because the arts provide a most effective way to reach and influence senior clients and other key decision-makersIt is self-evident that for sponsorship to work its target audience must be aware of it. Arts projects attract the eye of journalists and thus generate free publicity and that provides fodder for high-impact advertising. For a relatively modest outlay the arts are powerful generators of goodwill and are able to project the image of creativity, innovation, quality, social responsibility and trust. Because of the potential newsworthiness, high levels of awareness of the contribution sponsors make can be economically achieved. Large portions of the sponsorship cost can often be recouped through the free media coverage and direct business gains from senior clients. The arts offer very good value for money. Arts sponsorship works. It connects a number of key audiences, including opinion formers, which other sponsorship cannot.In terms of bang for your buck, sponsoring the arts is the best way to attract influential people. It cannot match sports sponsorship in the mass market, but it can tweak the perception of a brand. BP, Morgan Stanley and Aviva have proved how powerful sponsorship of the arts can be.
