La Clique ★★★★★

#EdFringe #Cabaret #Circus

One can’t help going into La Clique with a certain expectation. The reputation of this show thunders before it and with the swish surroundings of the Famous Spiegeltent, cat-lady usherettes and an insistence from the staff that the show is best enjoyed with a drink in hand, I was expecting to be dazzled and dazzled I was.

La Clique continues to show every other cabaret on the Fringe how it should be done. In 90 minutes we experience Scotty the Blue Bunny terrifyingly titillating the audience, an excellent piece of acro/dance fusion, possibly the funnest trapeze act in Edinburgh, magic dragons (with a Chihuahua in tow), songs from Brel, tap dancing, solo acrobalance, sexy burlesque and a very, very hot aerial straps routine all held together by a fantastic live band. It’s almost an embarrassment of riches.

The show doesn’t have a fixed compère but the acts flow effortlessly with introductions taken on by the band and the show never dips. We were told at the start to avail ourselves of the bar during the show but there was a palpable fear that, if you headed to the bar, you might miss something incredible.

La Clique is a Fringe legend and, with this standard of show, will continue to be so for many years to come.
